Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When are assignments due?
A: Unless otherwise specified, work is due one week from date of assignment.
Q: How soon will students get a response to their work?
A: I give myself a week turnaround, sometimes longer for a longer piece.
Q: What happens if it’s been more than a week and a student still has not received a response?
A: Please don’t hesitate to write me with a gentle reminder. Many a slip between the cup and the lip…ha. Things happen. Work can get lost. I appreciate the nudge.
Q: How many hours should my child schedule for each course?
A: That varies widely from student to student and from course to course, but roughly 3+/- hours a week.
Q: How much should parents be part of their child(ren)’s course?
A: While this is up to individual parents, I’d suggest that parents let children complete their own course, ask their own questions, manage their own time, etc. Independent work habits are important byproducts of these courses.
Q: Will my child receive a grade?
A: I am philosophically opposed to grading creative work. I think it stifles imagination. If it’s absolutely necessary, I will hold my nose and assign grades.
Q: How long do students have to complete an individualized course (and clients have to complete their contract)?
A: I allot 6 months to each course, but it’s usually a much shorter term for a course. After 6 months, the course or contract is retired.
Q: Will you be offering group courses year-round?
A: Yes.
Q: If for some reason we’re not satisfied with the course or unable to complete it, will you refund course fees?
A: No, I’m sorry, I don’t offer refunds.
Q: Can my child take the same course multiple times?
A: Yes, I will offer a series of curricula for the same course, as requested.
Q: Do you take Paypal?
A: No. It annoys me that they charge a fee. Payment is by check, mailed to me, or (drum roll please), via Venmo! (amanda yskamp)
Q: How many student must enroll for a course to be run?
A: Three.
Q: If I gather a group of interested students, would you run a group course on a specified topic?
A: Yes, I'd be happy to set up group courses on your chosen curriculum for 3 or more students.
Q: What are some of the possible subjects available for courses and/or private instruction?
A: Pretty much anything related to literature and language arts.
